Standardisation of Geological & Geomechanical Assessment
at Underground Coal Mines in Canada

Project Code 601962 RC146

Progress Report 2

by Steve Zou

September 23, 1999

This is a brief progress report for the above project. It covers the period between June and August, 1999.

A literature search was conducted to collect relevant articles on geotechnical design of underground coal mines It ended up with over 430 records. A short list is being made to include only the most relevant ones and they will be available on the website for all participants to review.

Materials collected from Quinsam and Smoky River during a site visit in April are being reviewed. The detail of those materials is given in the Progress Report 1 dated May 28/99. No new materials are received during this period.

Some materials from Phalen Colliery were collected from Steve Zou’s previous work. They are also being reviewed and another trip will be made to visit CBDC in the next a few weeks.

No rock property data are received from CANMET and the two reports from C Mark and S. Forgeron are not available yet.

Based on the available information in hands, a general frame work is being designed to include the data on the website and it will be adopted for all four mines. A detailed description of "the baseline approach to geological, geomechanical assessment and application" will be developed when the two essential reports are available.
